Midday Prayer: A Doorway into Thanks

Posted on October 29th, 2013

In 2008, I wrote The Daily Office (now available on Kindle), eight weeks of morning/midday/evening prayers and devotionals around the themes from Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. Since then, I have been collecting devotionals in preparation for writing a year-long Daily Office. The following is one for you to enjoy.  So take a 10-20 minute block of time to be with God, using the following as a guideline to be with Him.

Silence, Stillness, and Centering before God (2 minutes)

Scripture Reading – Mark 10:46-52

Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Devotional

It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.
Mary Oliver, Thirst: Poems by Mary Oliver

Question to Consider

Hear Jesus say to the blind man: What do you want me to do for you?” Hear Jesus say the same to you. What is your heartfelt response?

Prayer

Lord, help me to listen to You inside of me. Teach me to be quiet.

Conclude with Silence (2 minutes)
