Differentiation: Lead from the Integrity of Who You Are

Posted on February 18th, 2020

In this podcast, I share an important truth from one of my favorite biblical characters – John the Baptist. In the midst of a religious system filled with anxiety and expectations for the kind of prophet/leader he is supposed to be, John clearly defines who he is and who he is not. And, as you shall see, as we look closely at this passage in John 1:19-28, it is a key foundation for his authority from God.

The following is the handout I refer to in the message that we placed in the bulletin for people to fill out. I trust you will find it helpful:

“There are different kinds of voices calling you to different kinds of work and the problem is to find out which is the voice of God rather than of society, say, or the super-ego, or self-interest. By and large, a good rule for finding out is this: The kind of work God usually calls you is the kind of work: a) that you need most to do and b) that the world most need to have done…the place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking: A Seeker’s ABC
