Patience and the 4-Year Rule

When we take on a new role or position, it is helpful to remember Tertullian’s (155–222 AD) wise counsel: “It is God’s nature to be patient. One of the signs the Holy Spirit has descended is that patience and waiting is always by its side.” A few years ago Bobb Biehl, one of my mentors, shared an application of this principle that has served me well. It is the 4-year rule: When you take on a new position or role, it will take you 4 years to learn it.  (This applies even if you have been in the organization for 20 years yet are moving to a new role). 3 Killers of Effective Leadership

I called Bobb Biehl a couple of years ago at a moment I found myself “unclear” and “fuzzy.” He shared with me 3 killers of effective leadership that have served me since that conversation.  The following is my expansion on his points: 1.Fog When we don’t see clearly where we are, where we are going, and how we are going to get there, leadership (and life I may add) is hard. We know that Jesus “often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Lk.5:16).  It was a great struggle for Him, at times, to fully and clearly submit Himself to the will of the Father in critical moments. What We Know and Don’t Know about Bringing EHS to Your Church

We are now in our 20th year of cultivating emotionally healthy spirituality (EHS) into the soil of our local church here at New Life Fellowship in Queens, NYC. It has deepened and enriched every aspect of our life together. In the last two years, however, we have begun to intentionally and carefully bring EHS to the global church. God has brought churches from different languages, cultures, streams, movements, and countries to us looking to integrate EHS into their context. So we are early in our learning process. What do we know to be true? EHS must begin with leadership. When leaders teach EHS without living it, there is little fruit. The following questions were a challenge given to me recently by Bobb Biehl, my executive mentor: “Today marks 50 years since the death of John F. Kennedy.  Today marks 50 years since the death of C. S. Lewis. Question 1: How would you personally compare their legacies 50 years later? Question 2: What would you like your legacy to be 50 years from today? Question 3: What would be the 3 most strategic things you could change in your life today to move in that direction?
